Garo Feature #12

For the June, 1967, issue, I'm highlighting one story: Shinji Nagashima's "Life".  Click on the image to go to the media fire album.

A mother wolf and two cubs are out walking through the heavy snow one winter.  Conditions are harsh and one of the cubs dies.  They find a human hunter living in a cabin and the mother attacks him to get food for the other cub to eat. There's a fight, and the wolf rips off the guy's forearm while the hunter cuts off one of the wolf's ears.  Years go by and the cub has survived, having enough pups to start a new pack.  The mother wolf is now old and grizzled and has the respect of the new pack.  After killing a deer, there's a gun shot and the rest of the pack scatters.  The old one stands her ground and faces off against the hunter, who now has a sword blade attached to his stump.  They fight again and this time the wolf dies.  The hunter takes the body back to the cabin, while her daughter follows behind out of curiosity.  The hunter places the body on the ground across from the fire pit and sits down just as time catches up to the both of them.  The young wolf watches on as the cabin and its occupants turn to dust and are blown off into the wind.  40 pages.

War - Part 1

Ok, I know that I said I wasn't going to be translating any more manga for a while for Nihon-go Hunter, because I wanted to focus my efforts on writing up the summaries and commentary for as many of the Garo issues as I could. However, two things have come together to make me change my mind. First, there was a very specific request for me to take on Sampei Shirato's "War". Second, I finished processing the Garo issues up to Dec. 1967, which gives me 18 months of manga in the bag, and completes my first full year of issues (i.e. - all of 1967). On top of this, I've written a visual basic script to automate the process of creating the HTML pages for the Garo issue index and artist details pages, which promises to speed up all future work. So I sat down and spent a day typing up the Japanese dialog and then translating it. It's kind of a rough translation, and it's not word for word (just a warning to any translation purists out there). But, hopefully it'll be good enough to help promote Sampei's manga to those of you not familiar with it.

I'm only running the script here (it's long enough that I'll break it up over 2-3 days). If someone wants to take the scanned pages and photoshop in the text, just make sure to include my name in the credits and a link back to this blog. Thanks.

Garo Feature #11

For the May, 1967, issue, I'm highlighting one story: Kenji Nanba's "Battlefield, part 1". Click on the image to go to the media fire album.

It's the middle of WW II, and a group of American soldiers are killing time between attacks. A greenhorn has just been transferred into the unit, and the group introduces themselves. Then the fighting starts and one by one the unit gets picked off as they also whittle down the German enemy. They radio for tank support, but there's only one tank in the area that can be rerouted to them. A tank does arrive, but it's one of the German's. That tank does get eliminated, and at the end, only the new kid is left standing as, finally, the American tank makes its appearance. 23 pages.

Garo Feature #10

For the Apr., 1967, issue, I'm highlighting three stories: Kuniko Tsurita's "Struggle", Tashiro Tamehiro's "Mysterious Ball" and Yuu Takita's "Foot Soldier".    Click on the image to go to the media fire album.

After reading Garo issue #40 (month 13, year 1968), Kuniko Tsurita has a romantic dream of ninja life in a Kamui-like setting and wakes up disappointed by reality.  She challenges the readers to join her in bringing back ninja style to the present day, but some of the other Garo writers try to stop her from shirking her duties.  She goes out to fight crime, discovers that it's too much work, then returns home where her editor berates her for trying to reuse an earlier story ("Nonsense").  10 pages.

A large, strange black ball arrives and disgorges a stream of mice.  Self-explanatory.  8 pages.

A lowly foot soldier has been selected to commit seppuku.  His superior promises to pay three hundred gold coins to his family in return for doing this duty.  Initially the soldier likes the idea of getting that much cash, but it doesn't help that he himself won't see it.  Turns out that a group of higher-class samurai have heard about hari kiri and they want to see how it's done as a form of rehearsal.  The soldier tries to beg his way out of it but to no avail.  On the appointed day the other samurai arrive, he cuts himself open, and the others walk away saying, "yup, that's pretty much what I thought it'd be like, he didn't do it very well though".  The soldier dies.

Garo Feature #9

For the Mar., 1967, issue, I'm highlighting three short stories: Tsuge's "All-Night Wake", Shouhei Kusunoki's "Armor" and Shigeru Mizuki's "Betobeto-san".    Click on the image to go to the media fire album.

By Yoshiharu Tsuge (つげ義春), 10 pages.  Three delinquents out walking in the countryside demand to be allowed to stay in a house overnight.  The owner says "no", adding that her son has just passed away and she's holding a wake for him for the night.  His ghost will be really scary.  The three push their way inside and end up being put in the son's room.  They play with the corpse during the night, and finally the next day head out back on the road again, complaining that the woman lied - it wasn't scary at all.

Next we have a short 9-page story from Shouhei Kusunoki (楠勝平).  A samurai out fighting enemy troops sees an old man sitting and listening in a field.  Later, the samurai decides that he needs his armor repaired and goes to find a good armorer.  The place he settles on is owned by the old man, who says that he can hear the sounds coming from the armor.  In the next battle, the samurai discovers that he, too, can hear the cries of the armor.  So much so in fact that it drives him and his horse crazy.

A low-level yakuza is sent out to investigate a haunted house owned by his boss.  Another underling hasn't come back from the house yet.  The guy goes up into the hills, finds the house, and sees his friend's shoes at the door.  A zombie rushes into the room and he shoots it.  As the corpse collapses, it explains that he's really the missing yakuza, and that the monster -
betobeto-san -  is a centuries-old fungus that survives by switching hosts.  The yakuza looks down at the fungus growing on his hands (from when he opened the door) and falls over.
